Pterocarpus santalinus, commonly known as RED SANDALWOOD, red sanders, Rakt Chandan or saunderswood, is a species of Pterocarpus endemic to the southern Eastern Ghats mountain range of South India, a tree valued for the rich red color of its wood. Pterocarpus santalinus is used in traditional herbal medicine as an antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, tonic, hemorrhage, dysentery, aphrodisiac, anti-hyperglycaemic and diaphoretic.

The deep red coloured wood powder is often used as an incense base, and magically it is used for protection, strength, power and lust. It can also be used to enhance psychic powers and for meditation. Red Sandalwood is believed ot have many herbal healing applications, making it an appropriate addition to healing incense blends. The subtle scent is earthy and woody, with a light sweetness.
