PALO SANTO means ‘Holy Wood’ in Spanish. The Bursera graveolens tree is from the same family as Frankincense & Myrrh, but is primarily native to South America. Using the burning timber as incense has traditionally been used against bad energy, or for good luck; the oil was used during the time of the Incas for its reputed spiritual purifying properties, and charcoal from the burnt wood has also been used for ritual smudging. Both the smoke and oil have been used for centuries for medical purposes, and the smoke is even used as an insect (mosquito) deterrent. Our Palo Santo sticks have a gorgeous, rich scent, with an undercurrent of frankincense, to which it is related.
SIZING
Our Palo Santo sticks are currently available in two different size ratios – Standard long-lasting sticks approx 9-11cm in length (as pictured), or ‘Mini Sticks’ which are generally shorter and less standard in thickness (eg longer thinner sticks, or shorter thicker sticks).
To burn a stick, light one end until alight – burn for no longer than a minute then blow out and allow the smoke to smoulder, in the same way you might use a smudge stick. Burn over a heat-proof dish, censer, smudge pot or incense burner to catch the ash. See our other listings for Palo Santo chips and resin.
