FRANKINCENSE OIL (Boswellia carterii), India.

Frankincense comes from a small shrub that originates in the Middle East. The shrub yields a natural gum resin collected by making incisions into the bark; the resin is then steam distilled to create the essential oil (or allowed to dry in pellet form and used for incense – see our other listings).

Frankincense has been used in religious ceremonies since ancient times, and is known to slow the breathing and produce feelings of calm. An ideal oil for meditation, it is known to produce a psycho-active substance called trahydrocannabinole, which is believed to expand the consciousness.

Like most other oils extracted from resins, Frankincense oil is effective for respiratory catarrhal discharge and congestion. Used in inhalations it may be helpful for asthma sufferers as it eases shortness of breath. In skincare, its cytophylactic properties make it an ideal oil for mature, wrinkled skin in need of a lift; its astringent properties may also help balance oily skin condition.

This has become something we’re hearing a lot recently as many companies are advertising that ingesting oil is completely safe. It is not. Our answer, when asked if our oils can be ingested, is that we strongly recommend that you do NOT ingest ANY essential oil – this includes swallowing, a drop under the tongue, or even using oils in food preparation. In Australia the agreed medical guidelines are that NO essential oil should be ingested unless prescribed for a specific condition by a qualified aromatherapist (ie not the company trying to sell you oils). Ingesting oils is potentially very dangerous: most essential oils are toxic and ingestion can be fatal. Essential oils are particularly strong and the body is not designed to be able to excrete them, which can result in a toxic buildup causing organ failure, or in extreme cases – death. Being such strong liquids, essential oils do need to be treated with respect.

Visit our DISCOVER pages for an in-depth blog on this subject, called THE INGESTION QUESTION.

As the practice of ingesting essential oils goes strictly against Australian guidelines, we request that no Aroma Queen oil be used for this purpose.
