ORIGANUM (Origanum Vulgare), India.

Origanum oil is steam distilled from the Oregano plant, which is a hardy, bushy perennial herb from the same family as Marjoram. The oil is light yellow to reddish yellow in colour, with a characteristic herbal fragrance. Oregano was first recognised for its medical benefits as far back as ancient Greece, and its benefits were documented by writers such as Hippocrates and Aristotle, who used it as a strong antiseptic for the respiratory system, as well as for wounds, ulcers and burns.

Oregano is believed to be one of the most important antiseptic oils used in aromatherapy due to its high proportion of phenol, giving it strong antibacterial properties. It is also believed to be extremely beneficial in protecting from antiviral and antifungal activity, as well as being well respected for its antioxidant properties, which may help protect from damage to the body caused by free radicals. An anti-inflammatory oil, when applied topically Oregano can be used to treat arthritis or for soothing various types of inflammation or redness / irritation to the skin. May also be used as an expectorant to help loosen or eliminate the build up of mucous and phlegm. Avoid when pregnant.
