VALERIAN ROOT (Valeriana Officinalis), India.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Valerian Oil does NOT have a particularly pleasant scent. Please read thoroughly before purchasing.
Valerian oil is steam distilled from the root of the hardy perennial flowering plant known as Garden valerian or Garden heliotrope, which is native to Europe and Asia. The oil is yellow to green in colour, and is second to none in its reputation for treating insomnia, however while the flowers are sweetly scented and have traditionally been used in perfumery, it is important to note that Valerian oil comes from the ROOT of the plant, and has a very heady, earthy-smelling odour that some find unpleasant (please do take special note of this – we are unable to refund if you dislike the scent). Valerian Oil is best used with other oils to make the scent more palatable.
Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome. The ancient Greeks called the plant “Phu” (as in, phew – what a stink!). Hippocrates described its properties, and Galen later prescribed it as a remedy for insomnia, for which it is still extensively used today, often in the form of capsules or incorporated into anti-insomnia preparations. Valerian has tranquillizing, hypnotic and sedative properties and so can also be considered an alternative treatment to hypnotic drugs or sedatives used for the management of stress or anxiety – valerian is very useful in calming nerves; it is also renowned as a pain reliever and may help in the stimulation of appetite. Valerian is an antispasmodic, carminative, tranquilising, muscle relaxant, hypnotic, sedative, bactericidal, diuretic and stomachic.
To assist with the treatment of insomnia, try burning valerian oil or adding a little to a bath or massage oil before sleep, with a blend of other oils that will also help mask the strong scent of the valerian. Again, it’s very important to understand before purchasing that this oil does have a VERY distinctive scent, and we are unable to accept returns or refunds because of this. For anyone who finds the therapeutic effects of valerian invaluable, the scent is usually something that can be tolerated or masked as the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience of the strong scent.
Few adverse events attributable to valerian have been reported, though large doses may result in stomachache, apathy, and a feeling of mental dullness or mild depression, so the oil is best used sparingly. Because of the herb’s tranquilizer properties, it may cause dizziness or drowsiness, which should be considered before driving or operating heavy or hazardous equipment.
Avoid when pregnant.
